2020-10 “Agile Software Development” – How to Avoid Development Chaos

Location: ONLINE EVENT
Date: Monday, 19 October 2020
Time: 7:00-9:00PM

Whether you are part of a non-profit serving up a product or services, as a coder, you are often asked to develop code within an ever changing landscape. How to make sense of project and time management with various partners may at times seem unworkable.

In comes Agile Software Development. Following the Agile values and principals of your approach to development may work for you and for your organization, this, adding a more stable environment of cooperation to make your work more productive.

For this meeting we welcome Ellen Grove, Interim Managing Director of the Agile Alliance [http://www.agilealliance.org/] who will walk us through the Agile development and application within the context of non-profit organizations as well as for-profit organizations.

To join in on the meeting, RSVP to marc.pare@kwnpsa.ca. A couple of days before the event, you will be sent a link to our webconferencing platform and access key.

See you at the meeting!

Marc

2020-07 CiviCRM for Non-Profits

Location: ONLINE EVENT
Date: Monday, 13 July 2020
Time: 7:00-9:00PM

This month, we take a look at CiviCRM. Building constituent relationships and managing data can be a daunting task. CiviCRM aims to help manage this data in a way that is, at first glance, easy to manage and to update. Maintaining these vibrant relationships is often key to the financial survival of some non-profit organizations. Perhaps CiviCRM could be the answer for your non-profit and donor-base data management.

Ian Kelly, General Manager at PeaceWorks (https://www.Peaceworks.ca), walks us through all facets of CiviCRM and will speak to installation, management and use of CiviCRM for non-profits.

Ian Kelly has over 25 years of experience working in the field of information systems in a variety of settings.  He has a diploma in business administration from Wilfrid Laurier University and a Certificate in Project Leadership from the University of Waterloo. Ian provides fiscal, operational and strategic management of PeaceWorks. Highly effective in managing staff, Ian takes ownership of situations and puts a high priority on customer service delivery at PeaceWorks.

Ian has been involved in the creation and maintenance of several CiviCRM projects at PeaceWorks, providing guidance and support to many of our not-for-profit clients. He also encourages our PeaceWorks staff to contribute to CiviCRM community.  PeaceWorks is CiviCRM Bronze Partner.

* KWNPSA would like to recognize and thank PeaceWorks for its support of this month’s discussion.

* This is an ONLINE EVENT and a link to the meeting will be emailed to attendees closer to the discussion date.

2020-01 Marking Up Text for Structured Documents

Location: Room 1301 — Conrad Grebel University College, 140 Westmount Rd. N. · Waterloo, ON N2L 3G6 (bottom floor, in the hallway that connects the main building to the Chapel-Residence building)
Date: Monday, 13 January 2020
Time: 7:00-9:00PM

In October 2017 we discussed markup languages used by some members of the KWNPSA. In this iteration of the topic, long-time member Steve Izma discusses his use of markup languages in “real-world” circumstances throughout his professional career in publishing. Where documentation requires the need of serious structure, markup languages may be the right fit for the job.

This discussion will be a preliminary look at how logical document structure not only improves communication but also becomes an important archival format, allowing more programmable access to the content of documents over a variety of future contexts. While structured documents can be quite complex, markup systems allow for much simpler ways of creating and editing structured text. We will talk about how to keep the writing environment as uncluttered as possible so that the writer can concentrate on content creation and organization.
