Should a Nonprofit organization even use Social Media? What Social Media platform do you use? What sorts of things do you put on Social Media? Who puts it there? A team of SMEs? One person? Is this a full-time job? How much time does it take to maintain Social Media accounts for a Nonprofit organization? What will you do when your Social Media platform disappears? Or deletes your content? Or delivers your content to only a small set of viewers?<\/p>\n<p>We have all the questions. Maybe we can find some answers together.<\/p>\n<p>Bob and Marc<\/p>\n<p><strong>== Social Media ==<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Conversation started with employment\n<ul>\n<li>Headhunters and placement agencies frequently call potential employees or contractors, but rarely result in employment or contracts.<\/li>\n<li>Salaries for developers are higher in Waterloo Region, due to competition from other tech firms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Social Media is all about the analytics\n<ul>\n<li>Using analytics provided by the services, eg. https:\/\/analytics.twitter.com<\/li>\n<li>Analytics from different sites (Twitter, Facebook) are similar enough that direct comparisons can be made.<\/li>\n<li>Use some custom links to identify source of engagement on their own content\n<ul>\n<li>e.g. use one URL for Twitter, another for Facebook to reach the same content<\/li>\n<li>Use Google Analytics for generic information<\/li>\n<li>How does Google identify the source of the visitor if the links are all the same? Or the URLs are all the same?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Your following:\n<ul>\n<li>Are your followers passive or engaged?<\/li>\n<li>Twitter is good for a large number of followers, but low engagement<\/li>\n<li>Facebook is the opposite (few followers, strong engagement)<\/li>\n<li>Linkedin is good for Business-To-Business<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Before starting on social media, ask &#8220;What is the organization&#8217;s goal for social media?&#8221;\n<ul>\n<li>Distribute information (meetings, info about the cause, eg. environmental tips)<\/li>\n<li>Grow the organization<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Update frequency\n<ul>\n<li>Twitter: 8-10 time per day<\/li>\n<li>Facebook: Once a day<\/li>\n<li>Search for &#8221;how to optimize Facebook feed&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Have a hashtag strategy (what is a hashtag strategy?)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Staffing at one non-profit organization:\n<ul>\n<li>1 person for Twitter + Facebook<\/li>\n<li>1 person for Instagram<\/li>\n<li>Need more staff (Reddit, other social media forums)<\/li>\n<li>Maintaining social media accounts by volunteers\n<ul>\n<li>Takes lots of time! Split it up between people<\/li>\n<li>Automate some tasks (POSSE &#8211; Publish Once, Syndicate Self Everywhere)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Automate feeds\n<ul>\n<li>Facebook -&gt; Twitter<\/li>\n<li>Blog -&gt; GNUsocial -&gt; Twitter -&gt; Facebook<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Twitter will be around forever&#8221;\n<ul>\n<li>Some disagreement about that<\/li>\n<li>Whatever organization buys out Twitter will want to keep the eyeballs (users generating advertising revenue)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Reddit is a great platform\n<ul>\n<li>But nobody likes it<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Having a social media presence on Twitter and Facebook and Instagram will reach 90% of people online.<\/li>\n<li>The purpose of one non-profit organization is to change consumer behaviour\n<ul>\n<li>How can that be measured?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Are social media sites trustworthy?\n<ul>\n<li>Social media sites are bad for your personal mental health\n<ul>\n<li>Some people remove themselves from social media<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Twitter is a conversation\n<ul>\n<li>Really? 140 characters seems too short for meaningful conversation<\/li>\n<li>Twitter is (only) good for broadcast announcements<\/li>\n<li>A Grade 8 reading level is good for Twitter<\/li>\n<li>It takes skill to get more information into 140 characters than in long-form prose\n<ul>\n<li>But too many abbreviations and leetspeek and others can&#8217;t understand<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Dracula&#8221; by Bram Stoker was written as diary entries, good for syndication on Twitter\n<ul>\n<li>Books are being replaced by social media<\/li>\n<li>so put novels on social media where people will read them<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>How to be effective:\n<ul>\n<li>&#8221;Go where the people are&#8221;\n<ul>\n<li>But that leaves out Free Software solutions like Friendica (Facebook substitute) or GNUsocial (Twitter substitute)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Wouldn&#8217;t it be nice\n<ul>\n<li>if social media didn&#8217;t affect reading levels or comprehension<\/li>\n<li>people learned more evaluation and critical thinking, not rote memorization<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Filter bubble\n<ul>\n<li>Facebook only shows those things you&#8217;ve already &#8220;liked&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>reinforces biases<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Recognize that Social Media is just a tool\n<ul>\n<li>You can use it well<\/li>\n<li>&#8230;or you can use it poorly<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>We (Non-profit organizations) are parasitic\n<ul>\n<li>We&#8217;re using social media platforms for our own purposes, fully recognizing they&#8217;re not doing this for our benefit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>=== Meeting Closing Discussion ===<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Discussed CIRA (Canadian Internet Registration Authority)\n<ul>\n<li>supports the .ca domain extension for Canada<\/li>\n<li>most are aware of the organization<\/li>\n<li>result of discussion is to obtain the .ca version of the NPSA domain: kwnpsa.ca<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>=== Future Topics ===<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Monetization<\/li>\n<li>Branding (logos, names)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Location:\u00a0 Queen Street Commons Caf\u00e9, 43 Queen St. South, Kitchener Date: February 13th, 2017 Time: 7:00 PM How can a Nonprofit organization make use of Social Media?
