What factors do you consider when outsourcing a service?<\/p>\n<p>How do you deal with people providing external IT services to your organization? Why?<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Bringing in expertise we are not familiar with<br \/>\n+ Active Directory health<br \/>\n&#8211; Services that should be on the Internet<br \/>\n+ Hosting web servers<br \/>\n+ Running email servers on the Internet<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Switching from internal Exchange to Office 365<br \/>\n+ Offload responsibility from local server<br \/>\n+ Makes it easier to maintain<br \/>\n+ Free for nonprofits and featureful (Exchange, Sharepoint)<br \/>\n+ Easy to deploy<br \/>\n+ Good spam filtering<br \/>\n+ Can use it with Outlook<br \/>\n+ E1 gives you 1000 users<br \/>\n+ But you have to get on-premise Office if you don&#8217;t want to use the webapps<br \/>\n+ Skype for Business<br \/>\n+ The host does updates<br \/>\n+ Has backups built in (but you may have to contact Microsoft for restores)<br \/>\n+ Can you divorce? Can you switch providers?<br \/>\n+ OneDrive for Business had some issues initially<br \/>\n+ Workers can work from home using a single login<br \/>\n+ You can have one copy of a document with many different versions (so that you don&#8217;t have copies floating around)<br \/>\n+ Maybe you can dissuade people from emailing documents around?<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Web hosting<br \/>\n+ Better uptime<br \/>\n+ Can use shared hosting or VPS services<br \/>\n+ Outsource content management<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Web design<br \/>\n+ REEP had somebody design their CMS (WordPress)<br \/>\n+ Was on budget and people were happy<br \/>\n+ Their website designer does maintenance<br \/>\n+ Regular communications people can do updates<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; How to choose a website designer?<br \/>\n+ Have a matrix of criteria, brought together by staff<br \/>\n+ They found designers via word of mouth?<br \/>\n+ All the designers were local<br \/>\n+ Who does the wordpress updates? It is internal?<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Cellphones\/phone service outsourcing<br \/>\n+ Some people do phone service in house<br \/>\n+ Brendan supports people getting email on their cellphones<br \/>\n+ Windows 10 wants to unite all devices<br \/>\n+ It will allow you to wipe specific company content (and leave the rest?)<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; LibreOffice is releasing an online version<br \/>\n+ It is released by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.collaboraoffice.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Collabora<\/a><br \/>\n+ The official release is a month from now?<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; There is also <a href=\"https:\/\/wiki.enterpriselibre.org\/index.php\/Main_Page\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/wiki.enterpri&#8230;<\/a>\u00ad<br \/>\n+ Requires lots of resources to run the server<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; OwnCloud is having a schism!<br \/>\n+ They are making NextCloud<br \/>\n+ NextCloud will be distributed instead of monolithic<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Outsourcing developers (web, databases, &#8230;)<br \/>\n+ Most things we develop tend to be web apps<br \/>\n+ How do you open up permissions?<br \/>\n+ Do you want to give the keys to everything?<br \/>\n+ You want access controls<br \/>\n+ What data do they get access to?<br \/>\n+ How do you deal with people leaving?
